ICCAN which stand for (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), in a layman language its a regulatory body which manage all the domain name registered in the world and put regulations on the same.
Recently ICCAN has proposed a regulation for allowing private gTLD (Global Top Level Domain ) system, which mean owning your private gLTD, like .bob, .nasa or .AMY, Interesting right ?
The big company like cannon has already applied for gTLD application which will enable cannon to register domain name like india.canon or support.cannon. No doubt this feature will open up entire new generation of domain registration but also give company more wide area to grow there wings.
This also give a secure way for company’s to secure there trademark. As trademark check is carried out by ICCAN before enabling gTLD’s for any one, so soon we may see google.in as india.google
Company will take full advantage of this opportunity for branding or launching new product, Like we may see a new domain name like www.jazz.honda for honda new car model named “jazz”.
ICCAN will conduct auctions for gTLD’s like .bank, .school or .home which help individual to start there own registry and decide own pricing, however i personally feel this will lead to monopoly of name’s.
Now here comes the money, The fees for applying for gTLD’s is $ 185,000 and in the event no allotment of gTLD to you only $ 20,000 will be refunded. So think twice before you apply for private gTLD.
In the event of any conflict an auction will be done, like both Pepsi and Coke applied for “.cola”.
Other companies like facebook, twitter and nike are in process of application, soon we will see a new bread of gTLD’s.
